Reasons to Start Using HTML5 Today

Reasons to Start Using HTML5 Today

There is a lot of excitement around HTML5, and well there should be because this major reworking of HTML brings functionality that is very exciting. Although the new standard is still being defined many parts of it are pretty much done. Many websites currently on the World Wide Web have already started using HTML5.

HTML5 is about using semantic markup and with it you can create elements that are more relevant to web sites thus making your markup more concise and readable. The new semantics give data meaning. It enables search engines to more accurately determine the various types of information on a page and create an outline, or table of contents if you will thus making it easier to index. Also with the new canvas tag you can generate exciting dynamic content.

Browsers are now also now more capable of understanding the new standards for HTML5, CSS3 and the JavaScript API's.  It is a fun time to be a front end web developer.

HTML5 Demo's Built Not Only for Just Chrome

The developer's over at Google have built some pretty cool HTML5 demos. While these demos were built with their Chrome browser in mind they also work in Firefox, IE9, Safari, and Opera.

While you are there make sure to check out Browser Pong! Very Cool! Not like anything we've seen before.

It's easy to spend a considerable amount of time going through this site to see all of the latest examples. Try to contain yourself from having too much fun.

Is it too early to use HTML5?

Is it too early to use HTML5?

There is a fair amount of buzz out there regarding HTML5. After all there hasn't been a major update to HTML since HTML4. But, let’s analyze how we got here and where we are going to see if implementing HTML5 on new web sites is realistic. If nothing else the HTML5 buzz is well worth the hype, it offers many new and exciting changes.

The W3C started developing HTML5 in June of 2004 with the expectation of completing its development as a working draft by midyear 2007. HTML5 is currently slated to reach a Candidate Recommendation stage by 2012. It also has been stated that HTML5 will not reach a W3C Recommendation until 2022.

As you can see if you are developing HTML5 sites for today there is a high probability that your site may not work by the time the official working draft is released. The action we take with HTML5 is to have fun with it, implement it in a test based only mode and learn the new standard as it develops. By no means would we build a companies or individuals brand or reputation using the standard as it exists today.

Can Html5 Boost Email Video Marketing?

Can Html5 Boost Email Video Marketing?

With the introduction of HTML5 email video marketing is set to take off. To date if someone wants to do video in an email client they need to provide a link to the web site in that email marketing piece since email clients strip JavaScript or Flash for security reasons. Since HTML5 will be built into email clients and web browsers it won’t require any plug-ins.

Once HTML5 becomes the standard expect to see an increase in video emails. Research has shown a 100% increase in click through rates with video email marketing.

Twitter's Promoted Tweets is it a Hit or Bust?

Twitter's Promoted Tweets is it a Hit or Bust?

Twitter's Promoted Tweets have been online now for a select few, for the past couple of months. Twitter has stated that Promoted Tweets have been "successful beyond our wildest dreams." This was stated by COO Dick Costolo. A promotional offer by Virgin America - 50% off for the first 500 travelers - sold out in three hours. Bravo TV used Promoted Tweets to invite consumers to discover their "green IQ" on Bravo’s website, and the tweet generated 300 retweets - the maximum number allowed - in one day, generating 200,000 impressions.

The company is currently adding another dozen advertisers to the program on top of the five advertisers that participated in the launch. By Q4, they expect participants to be in the hundreds. They look to start to ramp this up aggressively in Q3 and then really blow it open in Q4, Costolo said.

Twitter's Promoted Tweets

You will see Tweets promoted by their partner advertisers called out at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages. Twitter strongly believes that Promoted Tweets should be useful to you. They'll attempt to measure whether the Tweets resonate with users and stop showing Promoted Tweets that don't resonate.

Promoted Tweets will be clearly labeled as “promoted" when an advertiser is paying (see graphic above), but in every other respect they will first exist as regular Tweets and will be organically sent to the timelines of those who follow a brand. Promoted Tweets will also retain all the functionality of a regular Tweet including replying, Retweeting, and favoriting. Only one Promoted Tweet will be displayed on the search results page.
