LAPD/LASD - Facility Tours

TOUR #1

MEN’S CENTRAL JAIL (LASD):
Built in two phases, the jail occupies over 900,000 square feet and was built at a cost of 35 million dollars. The facility houses the majority of Los Angeles County’s high risk, high security inmates and is considered to be the largest jail in the free world, with a capacity of 6,800 inmates.

TWIN TOWERS CORRECTIONAL FACILITY (LASD):
The facility is a unique complex that occupies 10 acres of land with two buildings that contain just under 1.5 million square feet. The towers contain the Medical Services Building and the Los Angels County Jail Ward. The facility is used to house female inmates, as well as inmates in need of mental health care. The facility also handles the various medical and psychological needs of the inmate population.

SHERIFF’S TRAINING ACADEMY and REGIONAL SERVICES CENTER:
This facility is located on what was once a high school campus and is home to many of the department’s specialized units including, the Reserve Forces Bureau, Major Crimes Bureau, Family Crimes Bureau, Narcotics Bureau, the Training Bureau and the Sheriff’s Relief Association. It also serves as the primary location for departmental training programs. The Sheriff’s Relief Association maintains a museum chronicling the department’s rich history and a souvenir store where department memorabilia can be purchased.

TOUR #2

SHERIFF’S COMMUNICATIONS CENTER:
The Sheriff's Communications Center (SCC) serves as the main communications relay link in the Sheriff's Department's communications system. SCC's primary functions include providing service and support to field units, relaying voice and digital messages between Sheriff's stations and their field units, expediting the response of emergency equipment and personnel, and querying into the nationwide criminal justice data networks.

EMERGENCY OPERATIONS BUREAU (LASD):
The Bureau functions as the Department Emergency Operations Center and houses the County Emergency Operations Center. This state of the art facility is used to coordinate mutual aid requests, maintains and operates the Emergency Management Information System (EMIS) and coordinates emergency preparedness plans with federal, state and local agencies.

METROPOLITAN DISPATCH CENTER (LAPD):
The recently completed state of the art Metropolitan Dispatch Center, is the base for the LAPD’s Communications Division and serves as a support entity for the entire city. Communications Division’s Valley and Metropolitan Dispatch Centers are the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for the City of Los Angeles. As the PSAP, Communications Division has the responsibility to staff and answer, on a 24-hour basis, the telephones upon which calls for service are received. This includes 911 emergency calls (police, fire, and paramedic). Communications Division handles only police related calls for the City.

EDWARD M. DAVIS TRAINING FACILITY (LAPD):
The Edward M. Davis EVOC Firearms/Tactics Training Facility has units responsible for the instruction of tactics, firearms, and emergency vehicle operations.

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM:
"Our mission is to enhance public safety by building a bridge of understanding and support between our community and its police department. We bring people closer together through a unique combination of a police museum and interactive youth programs that instill an appreciation of the essential role of the police in a free society."

ELYSIAN PARK POLICE ACADEMY:
The historic Los Angeles Police Academy facility, located in Elysian Park, provides all in-service training for the LAPD. It also serves as the headquarters of the Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club.
