| City of Hope “Fight For Life” Charity Boxing Event When: Friday, November 12, 2004
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Who: All law enforcement friends and family
What: 11th Annual boxing event
Where: Grand Olympic Auditorium
The City of Hope Charity Boxing Event started in November of 1994, shortly after Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies, while working patrol in the East Los Angeles area, encountered a young boy who been diagnosed with cancer. So “touched” were these Deputies that they befriended the young boy and attempted to provide help and improve the quality of life for him and his family.
Although this young boy did succumb, the Deputies continued their commitment to helping others and turned to the Los Angeles Police Department to join them in organizing the first of what is now an annual boxing event between the LASD and the LAPD. The second year of the event became very personal for both departments, when each saw one of their own fighting their own battle against cancer. Although Sheriff’s Sergeant Sylvia Smith did not overcome her battle, Los Angeles Police Officer Diane Alonzo is now a survivor who has rejoined her law enforcement family and is a member of the Fight For Life boxing committee.
In the past, both the LAPD and LASD have joined together and competed against the likes of Los Angeles County and City Firefighters, Scotland Yard, NYPD, and FDNY. This year’s event will feature a combined team made up of LAPD Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies versus and International team representing Britain, Canada, Australia, India, and possibly Mexico. Whatever the outcome from this event, whether the competitors win or lose, they are all in agreement that the true winner here is the City of Hope National Medical Center and the millions of individuals they treat yearly.
